Of all the types of adventurers found in Dungeon World, the fighter is the most pervasive. Across the planes, human kind engages in the violence of warfare. As a result, Topside is populated with a panoply of combat-trained adventurers kitted out in a wide ranging assortment of arms and armor. Unlike other player characters, fighters roll d66 for the starting equipment granting a wider array of options compared to other classes.
The woolly array found within this adventuring class results in a lack of distinct organization among them. Outside of the licensing office for adventurers, there is little to force a greater structure among the fighter community. There are, however, legends of intuitions of martial training spread word-of-mouth among the network of fighters. They are legends, in part, because both have not seen someone train under them in recent memory. This paths of martial advancement are the Training Dungeons of the Onyx Gardens and the Dragon Knights of Dungeon World.
The Training Dungeons of the Onyx Gardens
The fighting pits of Topside, known as the
Onyx Gardens, is a the perfect place for fighters to test their metal and keep form between adventures. This, however, is not the only martial training opportunity the Onyx Garden offers. Deep below the arena, the greatest pit fighters in the history of Dungeon World serve out their contracts with the Game Master- eternal unliving servitude training the future competitors of the Game Master's martial contests.
Five legendary champions currently serves as teachers of the Training Dungeons- each a master of a signature martial technique along with being a weapon specialist with a different arm. The ever shifting politics of these champions can prove tricky to navigate but rewards of teachings are awesome. Potential students who prove themselves worthy in the fighting pits may learn these famed techniques at the feet of these masters. That is, they could if anyone could access the Training Dungeons. The keys to unlock their doors have been lost inside in the Obsidian Hall...
The Dragon Knights of Dungeon World
The Game Master, as the ruler of Dungeon World, has little used for chivalry bound warriors in his service. As a result, he does not knight anyone in the service of the realm. That said, the Game Master is a fan of nostalgia and tropes. As a result, he placed five sages into the depths of the dungeon halls beneath Topside. Each of these sages work in service of the metallic dragons and embody their pursuits-- one Brass, one Bronze, one Copper, one Gold, and one Silver. These sages each possess the power to knight one being in their service. These are the Dragon Knights of Dungeon World.
These Dragon Knights are expected to uphold the virtues of their name sake dragon as well as honor their sage and uphold the realm of Dungeon World. In exchange, the granted the martial techniques and spiritual powers of the Sages of the Five. In order to follow this path, one must track down the sages to their sanctums within the Halls between Dungeon World. Each Hall possess a sanctum somewhere among its levels.
There has not been a Dragon Knight in an age but their legacy lives on at the Lodge of the Five Dragons. Those looking to pursue this path best begin with the records held at the
Lodge of Five Dragons.
