Against the Eye of Terror Pt. #1/Burning Witch Session #96

It all started with a desire to help the Children of Peroma. The elfin retainer Lirazil had enough of the suffering under the Eye of Terror she witness on a recent delve into 'The Complex'. She convinced her employer, the magician Phasmo, to rally an effort to strike out at the Eye of Terror and those allied with the tyrannical being. The mission would be to venture into the cavern territory of the mutants and attempt to offer them aid or relief in some capacity.

These plans those adventuring out of the Drinking Crow to lend a hand. Armeen and Bludoon offered to help rally forces of the Imperial Mother to the cause or perhaps hired the adventuring company the Midnight Marauders to cause a diversion. Fr. Bert wanted to help in a more tangible way have been overheard saying, "It won't take me much convincing to beat up on the Eye."

It was Copra Kaan that suggested the two circles of adventurers join forces in a series of coordinated  attacks. Rather than just moving to relieve the mutants suffering and creating a distraction, how about four simultaneous actions executed before the Eye of Terror has time to respond? The first attack would be into the mutant's territory in the northern end of 'The Complex'. Meanwhile, the Midnight Marauders would move in to poison the alcohol supply of the Eye's forces as it is being delivered to their feasting hall. Once the Marauders have attacked, a contingent would move into the take out the Eye's lieutenant Tormando once and for all. Finally, a party would follow in and attempt to seize control of the holding area controlled by a pair of demons allied to the Eye of Terror. The energy field cells once held the Eye of Terror themself and maybe it would be needed again.

The next three recaps will cover the events as they transpired. This covers the first action attempting to aid the mutants.

  • The following is overhead from Lirazel amongst the great press of adventurers returning to the Burning Witch after a night of well-orchestrated mayhem in the Complex.   “We went into the Complex hot, straight through the front door. We left what tools we could scrounge for the brothers by the well. Can you believe it? No sooner had our mission begun then it was nearly ended by a door stuck so fast none could open it. But the Amazonian biceps of Thela Rule made short work of the door with her axe! We hoofed it up north into the caves, threading the narrow path through the magnetic part, careful to walk in single file. We went past the guano, into a room with another well, and on past a cave a-glo with phospherence. We skirted a cave with a bad smell, and entered a limestone cavern with sand on the floor. We made our rest in a long narrow corridor, but were ambushed by 5 vat spawn. The spirit of one broke when they saw the might of my hammer, and Norome killed another with a dagger straight to the brain. But alas, hey slew Thela Rule--her magnificent biceps did not save her in the end. A bitter loss. As we settled back down to catch our breath, worms burst through the ground! As they tore at our flesh, a sleep spell put them down.

  • Spirits flagging we made our way into the yeast fields and down the waterfall, where poor Merry Macko slipped and fell, but with good humor. We worked our way east making out way to where the children of the mutants were kept. Not yet having tasted the transformation of Transmorgrapha, they looked indistinguishable from the children of Orm. They were guarded by two mutants, who listened to reason, since they were outnumbered 3 to 1. To protect them and put on a good show for the children, we pretended that we were sorcerers who put them in an enchanted slumber. This scared the children, but Lucky Pete tried awkwardly to comfort them. Having received directions from the children, we entered the room of the “priest” Attik. It was a room with a black rock altar, and a skull of a creature with multiple teeth. Attik was plying some mutant women with strange fruit in some unholy ritual. He wore an outrageous get-up with a headdress aping his master, the Eye of Terror, and a robe of woven banana leaves. I bewitched him, winning him to our cause. In a ruse, we had him send for the ogre Zonk, whom he lured with a messenger. No sooner had the ogre entered then we leapt upon him with weapons, Voff slaying him quickly with an arrow shot that disemboweled him. Smoothing it over with Attik as some kind of misunderstanding, we convinced him that his life was now forfeit to the stern punishment of the Eye of Terror if he stayed. So we hastened out, taking him along with his mutant women. On the way out, we left the head of the ogre in one of the hanging cages by the well near the entrance. Let the Eye of Terror feast on that! A round of drinks for all! Tonight we drink to the biceps of Thela Rule!”
