Burning Witch Adventurers Sessions #81 & #82: A Night in the Great Cavern

Talk around the The Burning Witch continued to buzz around the mysterious "Great Cavern". While its existence is a growing open secret among the adventuring community, how to access it remains more tightly controlled by those few determined to be in the know. A trio in the know- Journeyman Crannoc, Fancy Jean-Yves Beauvollier, and Kiddo- plotted a follow-up to their previous expedition along with a pair of lesser-experienced party members. The following party was seen heading in the direction of the Athenaeum of the Dying Sun:

  • Bludoon (Level 1 Dwarf)
  • Exodi Errai (Level 1 Fighting Gensai)
    • a wardog
  • Fancy Jean-Yves Beauvollier (Level 5 Bard)
    • Peaches (Level 4 Thief)
    • Freedom (sapient cat)
    • DT (dungeon terrier)
    • Ferris (Level 1 hireling)
  • Journeyman Crannoc  (Level 5 Magic-User)
    • Spike (wardog)
  • Kiddo (Level 3 Magic-User)
Late the next evening, the party returned covered in mud and smelling of vegetation rot.

Here is a recapping of events provided by Fancy's player Josh:

A bit of journal from Fancy, the adventuring man.

The adventuring party for this outing consists of: Myself, the Fancy man of Orm, Crannoc, the guy with the eyes, Kiddo the up-and-comer, Bludoon the culinarian, and Exodi that has some dwarf in him. Following along there was: Peaches “queen of the ring”, Ferrus the introspective, and Usha the gift bringer, as well as a menagerie of gentle beasts.

We made our way into the Great Cavern with intent to explore our way to the rumored mush-man of the jungle. On our way there we happened upon a few discoveries: We uncovered some ancient ruins with an intact frieze, A stand of curative banana trees, a dastardly viney plant, and some degenerate cannibals from a lost age.

With the threat of pursuit from a gang of drug-addled man-eaters, we quickly made for the residence of Callomonte, the mush-man. We spent the night listening warily to the drums of the cannibals while discussing philosophy with Ferrus and Callomonte. In the morning, some speech impeded dwarves appeared to trade with Callomonte and also, some information with us.

That day, Bludoon and Exodi decided to stay behind while the rest of the party explored farther. Returning to the site where the cannibals were first met, we discovered a trail leading to a restaurant with real jerk-face of a doorman. After being barred entry (I was only going to use the toilet anyway)we returned to our exploration and we discovered an intriguing well nearby. The bottom was furnished completely with bones so we climb down without hesitation.

We briefly explored some rooms with murals, tools of antique sorts, and knobby roots all about the place. Without going too far, we decided to head back to gather our party and return to the surface. On the way home we discovered a pile of corpses. Whatever.

Experience Points

  • 500xp each to Crannoc, Fancy, and Kiddo (250xp to Peaches) for reaching an unexplored section of Level 5.
Write-ups, art, or maps recapping the session earn PC Level x 100XP. Please let me know if anyone would like to perform a downtime action.

Fancy was going to use his downtime to try to get his patron Duke Clavis to help in securing a team of skilled artisans and engineers to go downtime into the Great Cavern to remove a large piece of stone work. Josh should roll 2d6 modified by Fancy's reaction bonus. The results are as follows:
  • 1-6- Clavis is unwilling to be bothered by the planning of the acquisition of an object he may purchase.
  • 7-9 Clavis will help but with a complication
  • 10+ Clavis will help rearrange a team.
It should be noted that the cost of hiring a team will be higher than normal rates due to them entering into the dangers of the Complex.
