Burning Witch Adventurers Session #18 **Updated with Scamandros' Recounting**

Three of the partners in the Athenaeum of the Dying Sun were joined by recent adventuring companions Frim Frimmerson and Betina at a corner in the Burning Witch. The group discussed a recent trip some of them took on an elevator inside "The Complex" as the poured over the communal maps (along with Crannoc's personal notes) to plan their next expedition. The party could be heard agreeing upon trying to use the elevator to travel to Level 3 of the dungeon as they headed out.

  • Betina (Level 1 Fighter)
    • Ornie Coldcut (Level 0 Man-at-Arms hireling)
  • Frim Frimmerson (Level 1 Fighter)
  • Journeyman Crannoc (Level 2 Magic-User)
  • Phasmo (Level 2 Magic-User)
  • Scamandros (Level 2 Magic-User)
    • Kiddo (Level 0 Scrappy Youth hireling)
The party returned bearing a bound 4' long beetle. While all party members still lived, Betina and Frim suffered from deep bites of some kind.

Here is a drunken recounting of the events of the delve by Scamandros to his newly a acquire goat.

Loot

  • 1 captured giant beetle

Experience Points

  • Defeated giant beetles: two in combat and one with oil 3 x 50xp
  • Burned in lit oil blue-haired beasts 6 x 15xp

Player Character Cut

  • 48xp ea.
Let me know if anyone wants to perform a downtime (including using one to find a buyer for the beetle). As always, players are able to get 100xp per character level for play reports, maps, or art related to the session.

  1. Despite prior multiple failures, Betina attempts prayer again. So for Spiritual Exercises I rolled a 3+6=9 -1 Wisdom Modifier for a final result of 8. Perhaps her time at the alter in the crescent shaped room has enhanced her Spiritual Perspective?

    1. What is she trying to achieve with this prayer?

    2. I think she is trying to make sense of everything that has happened to her since losing her eyes; the recent alignment change has been a huge change in her perspective on how the world works.

    3. Betina prays, reflecting upon the events of her recent adventuring. When she first prayed, to any power that would listen, it felt like a pleading to the chaos forces of the cosmos to let the change at the White Altar help with her lost sight. This new perceptive, gained in her meditations at the worn altar on Level 3 of "The Complex" turns everything on its head. The chaotic mess of events that makes up Betina's adventures in "The Complex" seem, in fact, to work in an orderly way to move her to this point. Maybe it was the forces of Order that heeded her call and not something like "Transmorgifah"? After all, isn't a directed use of something causing haphazard mutations the imposing of order upon chaos? Maybe it took the loss of her sight to open Betina to see how the powers of Law move in this world? The fighter gets the feeling that Law or Order or whatever someone wants to call it is involved in "The Complex". The shrine with the worn altar was old so the stake these forces have must be old themselves.

    4. Excellent! If Betina gets a second week's downtime action, I would like her to go follow up on her offering and note of introduction to the Red Monk.

    5. Sure. How do you want Betina to go about that?

    6. She will return to the dry well in Orm-of -Old to see if her note and offering of fruit are still there or if they've been removed. I think she would also take time to pray in that place because I assume it's somewhat quiet and secluded.

  2. So I used my downtime to check out the festival, but could I gauge interest in purchasing the beetle we captured, so other party members could sell it this downtime, or I could sell it next downtime?

    1. It would not take a downtime for Crannoc to check with Merdinus. The dwarf has no interest in the beetle as it poses no structural risks to the built world. He shares mere glimpses of his ongoing research with the Seer, revealing that he is working on ways to ensure that the Impossible Fortress is immune to the potential structural hazards of the burrowing worms.

    2. 1. Can I ask Merdinus if there's any book or other donations he would like to make to a new library that citizens are putting together? We're sorely lacking information about dwarf culture, language, rituals, and history. For instance, any types of ritual gift-exchange or "bread and salt" rituals that stop or preempt conflict? One hesitation before I ask; would we be on the hook for any kind of taxes or tribute if we started a new business or curltural institution, like the Atheneaum?
      2. Is there an expert who can tell me if the beetle is pregnant?

  3. 1. Merdinus donates his own book: Dwarven Work Cultures of the Region of Ur-Dan During the First Epochs of the Final Aeon. As for a tribute, each librarian must donate one copy of a volume contained within the library to the collection contained within the Impossible Fotress.

    2. The beast keepers at the Stables will examine the beetle for 5gp.

      2. I'll pay 5 gold.
